Klout Score : How To Raise It
Klout is a company that determines how influential you are online. They use Twitter and Facebook to measure factors like Follower/Follow ratio, number of retweets and number of likes in order to determine how influential you are to others. Klout defines influence as:
“The ability to drive people to action — “action” might be defined as a reply, a retweet, a comment, or a click.”
Your Klout Score can range from 1 to 100, the higher the number the more influential you are. Klout derives your score from three different categories.
True Reach
The size of your engaged audience. Read more about this here.
Amplification Probablity
The likely hood your content will be acted on. Read more about this here.
Network Influence
Influence of your engaged audience. Read more about this here.
The Benefits of a High Klout Score
The benefits of having a high Klout score go well beyond mere Klout Perks. The Wall Street Journal wrote a very interesting article about what special treatment awaits those people who are online influencers and have a high Klout Score. If you are a online marketing, digital communications, and social media professional then having a high Klout is important to your career. It is a testament to your ability to influences others which is essential in these fields.
What does Klout Measure?
Using the features measure in each Klout category above (True Reach, Amplification Probablity, Network Influence) which can be found here, I created a cloud tag to get a sense of what was most important in determining your influence to Klout. In one sentence that would be, “Unique followers, commenters, retweeters, and likers, who list you determine your influence.” Of course there is more to it than that but this sentence simplifies everything. It just says get different people to list you, comment on, retweet and like your content. I will add that not only should these people be different but the more influential they are the better it is for your Klout. This is just common sense and it echos the old saying,
“Birds of a feather, Tweet together.”
For example if you saw John Doe talking with President Obama, and they talk often, it is more than likely that John Doe is someone with influence. Now if you always see John Doe talking to Dave “Corners” Smith, who spends most of his day on the street corner with a 40 ounce of Old English beer and an eye twitch that resembles morse code, you might say to yourself, that John Doe ain’t hanging with my kid. Of course this is all very superficial because who knows the context of the relationship or the conversations. However, it also makes sense that if people who are influential are paying attention to your content, then it must me worth their time. Now that we have a summary of the things that Klout measures lets get into specifics.
How To Raise Your Klout Score
1.Connect Facebook
Once you have signed up to Klout or signed in with Twitter connect your Facebook account so that Klout can access your Likes, friends and comments from Facebook. This alone will boost your Klout score.
2.Increase Your Twitter Followers
Grow your followers. This gives you a larger pool of potential retweets, comments and @mentions. Read this post to find out how to grow your Twitter followers for free. I would suggest you invest in Tweet Adder (click here to go to Twitter Adder) as well because it is one of the best methods to automatically manage your Twitter account especially if you have multiply accounts. I use it daily on multiple accounts and have paid for unlimited usage. You can do profile searches for the people with lets say “social media” in their profile and then set up automated following, thank you replies and unfollowing of anyone who has not followed you back.
3. Tweet Consistently
Tweet Adder is again an essential part of raising your Klout Score. The more consistent you are at Tweeting the more your Klout Score will raise. Tweet Adder gives you the ability to load in Tweets, set how often you want them to be sent out and then go on with your day. When I get to the PHILO office in the morning, I find social media content and quotes that I like, load them into Tweet Adder, set it for 30min and then let the program run.
4.Followers/Following Ratio
I know it is a sign of respect to follow people back and I am all for that, but just know that you should not just follow everyone. You should manage to have more followers than you are following people. This shows Klout that you are in demand and people are willing to follow you with out being followed back. Friendorfollow.com is a great tool to figure out who is not following you back.
5. Increase Your Incoming @Mentions
Say hi to a group of people in the same Tweet. This way you will get multiple @ responses. If you say “Hi How is your day.” to 7 people in one Tweet, more than likely you will get 7 different @mention responses. This shows Klout that people are constantly @mentioning you, so you must be important.
I will probably update this as I figure out more tips but this should get you started for now. This is guaranteed to raise your Klout Score. When it does please leave a comment below so others know it works. Say hi to me on Tweeter @mrchichester Also note that Klout changes quickly. I did not Tweet for one day and my Klout score dropped from 55 to 53. You have to stay on top of your Klout Score or it will drop.
