The Back Story
I recently was on the hunt for a job in Social Media and decided to use Twitter as a way to separate me from the rest of the applicants and get the attention of the companies that were hiring for positions that I wanted. I created the Twitter campaigns using My Likes, Tweet And Get it and My Blog.
How It Works
The goal was to get the companies attention by connecting to them through their Twitter account. I aimed to grow their Twitter account and direct them to a landing page that had a note introducing myself. I felt that this approach showed the companies that I knew enough about Twitter (and Social Media) to get other people to follow them and Tweet a message promoting my worthiness for an interview. The first thing I did was create two pages a Help Me Get Hired Page and Company Introduction Page. Then I created a My Likes Campaign and promoted the Help Me Get Hired Page.
Help Me Get Hired Page
I first created the help me get hired page to let the people who wanted help me get a job know what was going on. I introduced myself to them and let them know how they can help and what I was willing to give them for their help. In this case the prize was an iPad 2. That’s right chief an iPad 2. I really needed a strong incentive because my goal was to get hired before November 20th. This page also had my Tweet And Get It button, which I created to allow those who wanted to help me to Tweet a message which was:
“@nightagency I just followed you on behalf of my friend @MrChichester. He wants to join your team. Read his note here bit.ly/vCr4I8″
And simultaneously follow the companies Twitter account. Once the Tweet And Get It button is clicked the person who helped me also gets this message to download.
Company Introduction Page
This page was created to introduce me to the company. It was basically a page with a unique cover letter and my resume. This page was sent to the Twitter account of the company I was targeting via an @message from the many Twitter users who wanted to help.
My Likes Ad
I then created an ad on My Likes which is a Twitter Pay Per Tweet ad company. People get paid to Tweet a message and this helped me reach people on Twitter who were willing to follow the company and Tweet my message. I promoted the “Help Me Page” through My Likes and I got a great response.
The Take Away
I did have to spend money for the ads (I did this three times to three different companies) and for the iPad 2 but it was worth it because I got the companies attention. They responded via a Tweet and an email . Even though I did not get the job, I was able to separate myself from the rest of the candidates and get their attention. Once you have their attention you still have to do the work to get hired. Ironically I did not get hired using this method. The company that did hire me does not have a Twitter account and needs me to build out their entire social network along with doing SEO and SEM marketing for them. However, I believe that this is a great method to help you separate yourself from the other social media candidates and land a job in social media. Make sure the company you are targeting has used their Twitter account recently and use it often. I was surprise to find that there are even some “Social Media Agencies” that don’t use social media, you figure that one out.
And The Winner Is
Now for the best part. The winner of the iPad 2 is JHoney92. I had two people that I really liked because they both seemed generally interested in supporting my effort to get the job. Just sending the Tweet is one thing but kind words go a long way and help to encourage the spirit because not having a job sucks. JHoney92 seemed genuine and if 92 indicates the year he was born then I’m glad that our youth still has compassion. Congrats and thanks again for the help.
